Feast of Assumption of Mary :(20c)

"MY SOUL MAGNIFIES THE LORD"

First Reading: Jud 13:18-20.15:9
Second Reading: Gal 5:13-17
Gospel Reading: Lk 1:46-56

*First Reading from the book of Judith speaks of the wonderful things Judith had done for the her people. She liberated them from their enemies and brought them out of slavery and suffering. She is the great pride of our nation. Judith is a prefiguration of Bl. Mother Mary who brought salvation to whole mankind through her son Jesus.

* Second reading from the letter of St. Paul to Galatians tells us that Christ has set us free. God has called us to live a life of freedom. Therefore we should not misuse this freedom for gratifying the desires of the flesh (sin). Moreover we must be ever willing to serve one another in love. This message of Paul is very relevant for all of us who are celebrating the independence of our country. Let our freedom bring more sincere love for one another.

Magnificat
In the Gospel we have the magnificat of Mary. Mary praises God for the wonderful things God has done in her life. Mary extols the fruits of faith and of humble dependence on the merciful God who cares for the weak and the lowly. In spite of the great importance God has given to Mary she takes no credit for herself but totally submits to God. Although she will be called blessed through all generations, she accepts it as God's gift to her.
Today we celebrate the Feast of Assumption of Mary into heaven after her earthly life. It was through her that Christ's glory was manifested to the whole world. She had to undergo her share of sufferings and pain for the salvation of humankind. Hence it is right that she also shares in the glory of her son by being assumed into heaven.

Mary our heavenly mother , you now share fully in the glory of your risen Son. Guide us who are still on the road of life, until we too come to share that same glory.
